The difference between Junior College and Secondary Schools (Singapore)

by Holydreams

After spending about a year in JC, I’ve come to learn of various differences between JC and SS

1. Junior Colleges (JC) have a much longer schooling hour (average of 9-10 hours a day) vs Secondary Schools (SS) of 6-7 hours a day

2. Pace of studies. JC studies twice as much of SS in half the time (2 years vs 4 years). Then again, I’m pretty sure university is more than JC but heck.

3. Co-curriculum activities are about as rigorous as in SS, if not more.

4. There are a lot more people of the same age range as you. No more childish people! (Though there are plenty, as what IWICSYI pointed out, but JC have more sensible people than polytechnic)

5. There are only 19(?) JC in Singapore, whereas there are over 100+ SS. And there is 5 (?) polytechnics.

6. JC usually have more facilities than SS. However, coming from SS and JC of poor reputation, I do not have the privilege to enjoy these so-called facilities. Sad.

Above mentioned points are those that I know/experienced. Those elite schools, however, point 1 does not apply to them. They have an average of 5-7 hours a day only. See the difference between elite and a school for losers?

Any other missing / wrong facts, you’re welcomed to comment or flame me whatsoever.

Any more points , if left out, will be edited when I feel like it

Hmm…similar to the American schooling system but there are only few differences.
    1. Secondary School (or as we refer to it, a 4 year high school) ranges from 5-7 hours a day(about 33 hours a week) while a full time JC course is on average is really only 14-22 hours a week, with excessive amounts of homework. Also, 4/5 people have to work in order to pay the steep living expenses of California, including myself.
    2. Same
    3. Same
    4. The age difference varies significantly in JC, but everyone has a decent level of maturity.
    5. Same thing again, Much more high schools than JCs
    6. Same
The biggest difference is the social atmosphere (not that it means anything to totally awesome IWICSYI of course). Everyone is so busy with work and school you don’t really have time to socialize. Out of a whole year I only made one friend that I still occasionally talk to.

Now that I read wikipedia , the Junior college of Singapore function a little differently from those in USA. We don’t have any High School in Singapore but the public consensus is that , we treat Junior College as our High School but in reality , it followed the six form college of England – a special form of schooling that emphasize on the GCE A Level Certificate .

Our Secondary school is more like a 4 years junior high school in USA or a middle school in Japan.

As for polytechnic student being less sensible , holydreams is right if and only if in term of the attitude of studying , otherwise , they are pretty much the same or even much more mature because the age group tend to be older . Though ,we all know that sometimes , people with great attitude in studying don’t really means that he/she is sensible or what not . I for one have seen those that reject any new form of knowledge if it is not relevant to their academic result .

Oh , I have watched the first 3 episode of Ping Pong Club as well . I felt sorry to say this but I don’t think that it really is a 85 point and above material , though I must say that it is quite wacky and refreshing . My main problem with it is that the execution and jokes doesn’t click with me . Funny how that work because I always liked penis joke . It is my problem here , not the series itself.

I guess comedy just work variably for different people . It is just like how I thought Cromartie High School is really funny and how Seitokai is so boring , yet on the other hand , Holydreams find Cromartie lame and Seitokai to be funny .

Don’t get it wrong though , I find it to be quite decent and will definitely continue in watching it.

“quote”As for polytechnic student being less sensible “quote”

As for this , I personally have a different point of view from IWICSYIntestines.

Most of the times , it really depends on the type of environment that you are in.

Say ,For example , my school (which can be describe as a competitive school?) .
In term of academic , I would say most of the students there are quite intelligent.
and for the ’sensible’ part , the below points really got my hands down.

1.Some of them do know how to act as if they are good-for-nothing.
2.They do know how to make you feel great (example: praising you non-stop)
    3.Project works
( They do know you would like a good score to be reflected on your portfolio. So they can just leave you in the lurch for project discussion and
when you tell them to get serious and do some proper job , they will simple do some half-ass job for you.Since you are the one who like to gain great score in the end , you would not let them ruin the whole thing by just handing in works with simply no substances. This is a few reason why i hate project works , but hell yeah there is no way to avoid it because in the future ______/lazy to write/)

4.Some of them are quite pretentious bastards , they will first get you to play games & they will meantime study while you are busying playing games.

So yeah , after reading these few example , i can say its quite a sophisticated world down here . It is a indeed a eye-opener for me after the SS education & more to expect in the near future :P

From some advices given to me by IWICSYIntestines , I have ‘leveled’ up a bit
and gain more tolerant , close one eye @ time to time .
I do feel that i would gain more experiences & knowledge if i continue to handle my projects with a serious tone. Afterall , at the end of the day , it is me who will gain and the ‘others’ who will lose an opportunity to do such stuffs.

Life is short and hence , everyone , you should be doing things that you enjoy doing O.o , with that , i shall end .

Good Night ( おやすみ なさい )

I like both Cromaite High School and Setokai so I guess that puts me somewhere in the middle of you and holydreams. I’m very open to all types of genres. Sexy commando is pretty funny too.

I just recently watched ef a tale of melodies and almost did a back flip during the opening song.

On another unrelated note; No offense or anything, but I notice that you make the same grammatical errors repeatedly. I can honestly say your English is spectacular (holydreams is freaking phenomenal though). I know I make lots of mistakes but that is just because I’m a lazy jackass.

    Point One:
“For once , I have seen those that reject any new form…”

I have noticed this mistake a few times. Instead of “For once” you should definitely use “I for one have seen those…” when you are speaking of a personal experience (no comma)

    Point Two:
Your present and past tense are mixed up. I have noticed this MANY MANY times in your previous posts.

    For example:
    Past “I washed the car”
Present ” I am washing the car”
Future ” I will wash the car”

    Point Three:
When referring to a person or object, you tend to mix up calling them a name and calling them by act of being that name. Normally I would let this slide as a typo but the amount of times I have seen this in your posts is astronomical.

    For example:
“You are retard” should be “You are a retard” or “You are retarded”

I am not going to sit here and correct every little mistake and I know my English is not perfect, but I strongly suggest paying attention to these kinds of things. I know you are very intelligent and if you work on small things like these your English will be perfect in no time. Feel free to call me an asshole or reply to this comment with a slur of Chinese obscenities if you wish.

    I also like penis jokes.

I’m not that sure about it, but just to confirm – “holydreams is freaking phenomenal though” – is that supposed to be a sarcastic commentary?

Lol , I won’t call you an asshole , I always need guide but can’t really find one . I only started learning the fundemental of english language starting this year . For the past 10 years , I don’t really understand what I am studying at all! My teacher in secondary school really sucks . All the time , she is talking about how great she is and how great she is . I learned more by googling for 10 months .

As for the many years before my secondary school , the only thing that I thought of is how to wonderful it will be if I can skip today’s class.

Eh what! You liked seitokai? Never mind , I thought that it is quite ok as well but is too pointless to my liking . I can’t see any potential from that series that’s why I dropped it before I start hating it . I also have a wide range of preferance , the only thing that I don’t watch is yaoi and yuri . Tentacles rape and what not is ok though … … lol .

    @Holydreams
Lol , it is just a say and throw away comment , why so serious about it? It is most likely a compliment . In before any more comment to defend yourself .

Seriously, your English is very impressive. I very rarely find an error in any of your works. I might have exaggerated a little but it was not a sarcastic comment. I live in an urban environment where a large number of people learn English as a second or even third language so I know how difficult it can be to learn.

    @IWICSYI

Thank you for not calling me an asshole, I really didn’t mean any offense. In a year or two you English will definitely be as good as holydreams (that was a sarcastic comment).

I like tentacle rape as well. (that was not a sarcastic comment)
